Overview
PULSE is a student run-organization based out of Rice University that connects premedical students to physicians in the Texas Medical Center.
Students in PULSE shadow doctors on a weekly basis, and work with faculty at Rice to reflect on their experiences and share their ideas via social media outlets.
Students are also actively involved in finding or creating ways for the group to volunteer and further serve the TMC and surrounding community.
Our Goals
To give premedical undergraduates in the Texas Medical Center area an opportunity to shadow physicians.
To facilitate doctor shadowing of multiple different specialties at all of the major hospitals and clinics in the Texas Medical Center.
To teach premedical students through observation about the qualities and realities of being a doctor, so they can make an educated decision whether or not to continue their journey into medical school.
To expose premedical students to the techniques involved in listening to patient narratives, physician empathy and personalized care.
To use the collective mind power of this organization to positively influence and serve the community.
To let premedical students decide how many hours they can shadow per week, so they can get meaningful clinical experience without compromising schoolwork.
To have student interpreters hone their skills while shadowing.
To use social media at the end of the semester to share what students have absorbed with a wider audience.
